Heat, slope and a staircase built for one
An attic is the one room people avoid in July and in January. In Glen Ridge, an attic room in our job photos was filled with boxes, a bookshelf and stacked furniture, all of it hauled up years ago when the stairs seemed less steep. Nothing up there is urgent until it suddenly is: a sale, a roofing job or a plan to downsize.
Getting it down is the hard part. Attic stairs are narrow and often fold out of the ceiling, the roofline slopes, and heavy pieces have to be turned, tilted and passed hand to hand. Add dust and summer heat, and most owners wisely stop after one or two boxes and leave the rest for another year.
How the crew works a tight attic
Photos of the stair opening and the attic floor tell us most of what we need, and a short video helps if the space runs long. You get an estimate first, and the final price is confirmed on site. If the house is empty during the day, you do not have to be there once access and scope are confirmed.
Crew members pass items down in a line instead of one person making forty trips, and they carry larger pieces slowly to keep walls and banisters clean. A clear path through the house keeps anything from being dragged. The in-house New Jersey crew has no subcontractors, usable pieces go to donation, and recyclable material goes to recycling, with the 25 cubic yard truck waiting at the curb.
Attic pricing, limits and the open floor
Attic loads are priced by volume on the truck: $350 for a 1/16 load, $485 for 1/8, $685 for 1/4, $985 for 1/2, $1,685 for 3/4 and $1,985 for a full truck. Labor, loading, hauling, disposal fees and sweep-up are included, with no hourly rate and no hidden fees. A single bulky piece, such as a bookshelf, is a single-item pickup at $185 to $250.
Chemical cans, old paint and pesticides stored under the eaves cannot go on the truck, and neither can fuel, gasoline, propane tanks, medical waste or unknown liquids. We also do not take asbestos, so any pipe wrap or insulation you suspect should stay in place until it has been tested by the right specialist.
The after photo from Glen Ridge shows what the job is for: a clear floor and open space you can inspect, insulate or finish. The crew sweeps before leaving, and same-day or next-day scheduling is often possible, seven days a week, anywhere from Denville to the Hudson River towns.
